The first List was created in 1997 by the National Trust of Australia (NSW). Over the years the list has changed as people pass away and new ones are added. In 2012 the 7 openings that became available because of the passing of previously listed Australians were finally filled. The names are listed in red.

Why does the list only have 99? After the selection of the 7 new names, Margaret Whitlam passed away 17 March 2012 creating a new opening.
